چکیده
PURPOSE To verify the effect of the scan angle of the optic nerve head (ONH) on measurements of peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness by using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT). METHODS Both eyes of 64 healthy volunteers were scanned by the optic disc cube 200 x 200 scan of a spectral-domain OCT system. Ultra-high resolution OCT images of the ONH were used to determine the horizontal, vertical, and three-dimensional scan angles of the ONH. The adjusted clock-hour RNFL thicknesses generated by the three-dimensional scan angle of the ONH were then compared with the original clock-hour RNFL thicknesses. RESULTS The mean horizontal, vertical, and three-dimensional scan angles of the ONH were 12.62 +/- 5.17 degrees, 4.17 +/- 3.30 degrees, and 13.62 +/- 5.13 degrees, respectively. In 125 (97.66%) eyes, the scanned ONH image was tilted temporally; in 89 (69.53%) eyes it was tilted inferiorly. The adjusted clock-hour RNFL thicknesses generated by the three-dimensional scan angle of the ONH were significantly different from the original values (P = 0.009); the mean difference was 13.26 +/- 14.95 microm, and the overall correlation and agreement were not excellent, especially in the inferior quadrant. CONCLUSIONS Current intraretinal imaging devices such as OCT assume that the ONH is positioned exactly in front of the scanning beam; however, this assumption appears to be inaccurate. Because the scan angle of the ONH varies and also influences RNFL thickness measurements, it may be better to consider using the ONH scan angle as an adjustment factor when peripapillary RNFL thicknesses are calculated by OCT.

Clinical Applications of Optical Coherence Tomography in Ophthalmology
Assessment of the peripapillary nerve fiber layer and macular thickness can be determined in ophthalmology using optical coherence tomography (OCT). Decreased nerve fiber layer thickness and macular ganglion cell thickness in optic nerve ischemia have been correlated with visual field loss. OCT allows deep optic nerve head evaluation which helps understand pathophysiology of diseases. Furtherm...

OBJECTIVE To study how customizing the peripapillary scan diameter on the basis of optic nerve head (ONH) diameter affects retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness measurements using Stratus optical coherence tomography (OCT). METHODS Retinal nerve fiber layer was examined using 1 fixed-diameter circular scan (3.4 mm) and 2 customized-diameter scans (at 0.5 mm and 1 mm from the ONH edge) in...

PURPOSE To evaluate the effect of age on optic nerve axon counts, spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SDOCT) scan quality, and peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFLT) measurements in healthy monkey eyes. METHODS In total, 83 healthy rhesus monkeys were included in this study (age range: 1.2-26.7 years). Peripapillary RNFLT was measured by SDOCT. An automated algori...
متن کاملRetinal nerve fiber layer thickness measured by optical coherence tomography in patients with schizophrenia: A short report
Background and Objectives: Our study aims to assess retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness in patients affected by schizophrenia. Methods: Ten schizophrenic patients (mean age 39 +/13 years, best corrected visual acuity ≥ 20/20, refractive error between +/-2 diopters, and intraocular pressure <18 mmHg) were enrolled. They were compared with 10 age-matched controls. In all subjects, optic ne...
